Parrots increase in price from week 3 until weaned. This increase reflects the expense of hand feeding including the time involved. The asking price at three weeks is usually 50-60% of the weaned price. Each week, the price of the baby parrot increases by 5-10%. Some hand feeders add more per week during weeks 3-7 and less thereafter to reflect the amount of work involved in the early weeks of hand feeding. If you are responding to our classified ads, please note the date of the ad and expect that the price will increase slightly from week to week. The only time we purposefully raise a bird until it is weaned is when we have sold the bird and have a deposit. We require a 50% deposit. The final price of the parrot is determined by the age of the parrot when it is picked up or shipped. We will work with buyers to allow them to purchase a parrot on a payment plan. We prefer to have our customers visit our home for a thorough orientation to their new parrot. We try to time the visit to the feeding of their new baby. We are much more comfortable selling a bird if we know that the new owner has been properly instructed in the care and feeding of their new bird. If a buyer has no hand feeding experience we will not ship a bird until it is weaned. If a buyer has hand-feeding experience, we will be happy to discuss shipping the bird when it is on two-a-day hand feedings and eating solid foods. Shipping costs typically run between $140 and $225, depending on the size of the parrot. Many of our customers travel to New Orleans for a weekend and take the bird home when they leave. Medium sized parrots can travel in the cabin of an airplane for $75. Except in Summer, parrots can be checked as live baggage for the same price. |
